Flying Safe and A Brief Overview of the Rules

Picture
This is a brief overview of safety tips and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines for flying an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) – often called a drone. We highly encourage you to stay updated with ALL of the current guidelines here: www.faa.gov/uas. Another good resource for staying updated is www.KnowBeforeYouFly.com.

When You Need FAA Permission to Fly

  • Within B, C, D and E Surface Airspace.
  • During TFR (Temporary Flight
    Restrictions)

FAA UAS Guidelines

  • Hobbyists can't fly over 400 feet. 107 Pilots can fly over 400ft if within 400ft of a structure and not in Controlled Airspace.
  • Can’t fly within controlled airspace (B, C, D and E Surface Airspace) without ATC permission.
  • Can’t fly within 3 miles of stadiums during NFL, MLB, Division 1 NCAA Football, and Sprint Series, NASCAR, or Formula One racing. TFR is active 1 hour before and 1 hour after event.
  • Can’t fly from National Park property.
  • Can't fly over people without a waiver.
  • Can’t fly beyond line of sight.
  • Can’t fly at night without a 107 waiver or appropriate lights for hobbyists.
  • Can’t interfere with emergency responders or fire fighting efforts.

Our Tips for Flying Safe!

  • Always fly smart and error on the side of safety.
  • Always perform a pre-flight check.
  • While on location visually scan AND LISTEN for low flying aircraft.
  • Know your surroundings and maintain situational awareness.
  • Fly with the mindset "If my drone were to fall out of the sky right now, where would it land?"
  • Do not fly beyond line of sight.
  •  Do not  fly over people.
  • Do not fly at night without training and proper credentials.
  • Whenever possible use a visual observer. There are many helpful apps too. We recommend the app Flightradar24. Please note: not all airplanes in flight are registered on Flightradar24.
  • Know your local laws.
  • If you see NO DRONE ZONE signage do NOT fly.
  • Avoid flying near airports.
  • Avoid flying near heavily populated areas (stadiums, busy roadways, events, parks and amusement parks).
